Faqir Chand Kohli (फकीरचंद कोहली)

Faqir Chand Kohli, commonly known as F. C. Kohli, was an Indian engineer and businessman who is widely considered as the "father of the Indian software industry." He was born on March 19, 1924, in Rawalpindi, British India (now Pakistan) and passed away on November 26, 2020, in Mumbai, India.


Kohli received his Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Punjab in Lahore and later obtained a Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. After completing his education, he began his career as an engineer at the Tata Electric Companies in Mumbai. In 1951, Kohli joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which was then a small division of Tata Sons, and played a key role in establishing the company as one of the leading software services providers in India.

He served as the company's CEO from 1969 to 1984 and as its president from 1984 to 1996. Under his leadership, TCS became the first Indian software company to export its services and the first Indian company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Kohli was a pioneer in the Indian software industry and made significant contributions to the development of the Indian software industry. He was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) in 1997. He also received the Padma Bhushan award in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan award in 2011, both from the Government of India, for his contributions to the Indian software industry. F. C. Kohli was a visionary leader and a pioneer in the Indian software industry.
